Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has denied any involvement in the 2018 Offa armed robbery, describing fresh charges filed against him by the Kwara State Government as politically motivated.
In a statement on Friday, Saraki accused Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of orchestrating what he termed a “frivolous and malicious” legal action aimed at damaging his reputation.
“I have nothing to do, directly or indirectly, with any case of armed robbery or any criminal matter whatsoever,” he said, insisting that previous investigations found no link between him and the crime.
Saraki argued that the case had already been thoroughly investigated during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that legal advice from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation at the time did not establish a prima facie case against him.
According to him, the Director of Public Prosecution had concluded in two separate reports in 2018 that there was no evidence connecting him to the offences of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, or culpable homicide.
The former Senate President alleged that the charges were revived after he granted a recent television interview addressing insecurity in Kwara State, accusing the state government of suppressing earlier investigative findings to mislead the public.
He further claimed that attempts were made to pressure victims’ families into pursuing civil actions against him, an effort he said ultimately failed.
Saraki criticised the governor’s approach, arguing that attention should instead be focused on tackling insecurity in the state.
“A governor whose state is battling serious security challenges should prioritise protecting lives and property, rather than pursuing politically motivated cases,” he said.
Despite his denial, the Kwara State Government has filed a 20-count charge against Saraki and three others, including former Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed.
The defendants face allegations of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, among other offences, in a case linked to the Offa robbery incident.
They are scheduled to be arraigned before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin on June 4, 2026
