Kano Street Erupt As Yusuf Returns Amid Political Realignment

A sea of supporters flooded the streets of Kano on Saturday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made a dramatic return following high-level engagements with leaders of the All Progressives Congress.
From the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport to the city centre and Government House, jubilant crowds waved flags, sang solidarity songs, and cheered the governor in a charged atmosphere that reflected both excitement and political significance.
The reception comes at a time of intense political reshuffling in the state. Yusuf’s recent alignment with the APC has stirred conversations across party lines, especially as he was part of a delegation that visited Bala Mohammed—a move widely seen as part of broader efforts to redraw political loyalties ahead of 2027.
Adding to the shifting dynamics is the growing influence of the opposition coalition led by Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi under the African Democratic Congress, deepening the contest for Kano’s political soul.
Despite these developments, Saturday’s turnout sent a strong message.
“This crowd shows the people are still with him. Leadership is about service, not just party,” a resident remarked.
Others pointed to the 2027 elections:
“We will mobilise and vote massively. Kano has spoken,” another supporter said.
Political watchers say the unfolding alliances underscored Kano’s strategic importance in national politics, with its large voter base often proving decisive in presidential elections.
For now, Yusuf’s triuphant return signals that even in the midst of shifting loyalties, his grassroots appeal remains a force to reckon with.
