Former Deputy Governor and 2023 governorship candidate of the APC, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a significant shift in Kano State politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gawuna completed his registration and received his ADC membership card at his ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area, in an event that attracted a large crowd of supporters and political stakeholders.
The move follows his recent resignation from the APC, which he described as a personal decision, as well as his exit from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), where he served as Board Chairman. The resignation aligns with electoral guidelines requiring political appointees to step down when seeking elective office.
A former Deputy Governor under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje between 2018 and 2023, Gawuna expressed appreciation to his supporters and pledged to strengthen the ADC’s presence in Kano.
The defection ceremony was attended by notable political figures, including former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, underscoring shifting alliances within the state’s political landscape.
Analysts say Gawuna’s move reflects ongoing realignments across Kano politics, as key actors reposition themselves ahead of the next election cycle, potentially reshaping political dynamics in the state.
