The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Nigeria’s Samson Adamu as its Acting Secretary-General, marking a historic milestone for the country in continental football administration.
Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF’s establishment more than seven decades ago.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
According to the statement, Adamu replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who stepped down to contest the presidency of his country’s football federation.
“Adamu’s nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by Congress at its meeting held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo,” Olajire stated.
Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he was instrumental in organising several major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
His appointment has been widely seen as recognition of his administrative experience and contributions to African football development.
Observers say the development also reflects Nigeria’s growing influence within CAF’s leadership structure.
Adamu is expected to oversee the day-to-day administrative functions of the organisation pending a substantive appointment.
