ADC Labels 2027 Electoral Rules ‘Booby Traps’ to Stop Opposition Candidates

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the newly introduced 2027 electoral requirements as “booby traps” allegedly designed to prevent opposition parties from fielding candidates.
The party said provisions in the revised framework and timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) impose stringent compliance conditions that could effectively shut out smaller political parties from the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the development, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, argued that the legal requirements—particularly the directive mandating a fully digitalised membership register across all 36 states within a short period—are unrealistic and burdensome.
According to him, failure to meet the conditions could disqualify parties from presenting candidates, a scenario he warned would undermine democratic competition and inclusiveness.
The ADC is therefore calling for a review of the new rules, insisting that the electoral process must provide a level playing field for all political actors ahead of 2027.
