The Commissioner for Livestock Management in Jigawa State, Salim Abdurrahman Lawan, has flagged off the distribution of food items to vulnerable households in Gwaram Local Government Area as part of Ramadan welfare support.
The exercise was launched in Jikas town, headquarters of Maruta Political Ward, where the commissioner said the intervention was designed to cushion the economic pressure on families during the holy month of fasting and prayer.
Lawan, a former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Federal University Dutse, explained that the outreach would extend to all 11 political wards in Gwaram LGA.
“This is just the beginning in Maruta Ward. Items meant for the remaining 10 wards have already been dispatched to their respective headquarters,” he said.
He described the initiative as an act of solidarity, noting that Ramadan presents an opportunity to support the less privileged and strengthen community bonds.
According to the commissioner, the current distribution marks the first phase of a broader humanitarian programme that will reach more residents in the coming weeks. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving welfare across the council area.
Each polling unit received essential food items including sacks of sugar, maize, beans and millet for onward distribution to deserving families. Village heads and Juma’at Imams were also incorporated into the outreach to ensure fairness and transparency.
Community leaders and beneficiaries commended the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful. They called on other well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture in the spirit of compassion and shared responsibility that defines Ramadan.
