Chaos erupted at Kano’s popular Singa Market on Saturday night as fire swept through “Gidan Gilas,” a complex housing multiple warehouses and grocery shops, destroying millions of naira worth of goods.
The blaze, reported around 9 p.m. after the market had closed, sent traders and residents scrambling to rescue their commodities. Eyewitnesses said the flames spread quickly to neighboring buildings, turning the usually busy market area into a scene of panic and confusion
The Kano State Fire Service, joined by a private tanker from Aspira Nigeria Limited, battled to contain the inferno, but the fire’s intensity slowed efforts.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who rushed to the scene, ordered an urgent investigation into the recurring market fires. Speaking through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor called on the Federal Government to equip the state with modern firefighting tools, including air support, to prevent future tragedies. He praised the courage of emergency responders and urged traders and residents to remain calm as efforts continue to control the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations continue.
