The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to immediately secure the release of detained activist Princess God’sown Udoito, warning that her continued detention undermines constitutional democracy and freedom of expression.
In a statement issued on Monday, HURIWA condemned the arrest and prosecution of the female critic on allegations of defamation, describing the action as a misuse of state power. The group stressed that defamation is a civil matter and should be pursued through the courts, not through police arrest and detention.
HURIWA argued that criticism of public office holders is lawful and essential for accountability, noting that elected officials are not above the law and must tolerate dissent in a democratic society. It urged the governor to respect due process and allow citizens unhindered access to their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
The rights group also raised concerns over reports that cultural practices, including masquerade displays, are being criminalised in parts of the state, describing such actions as violations of citizens’ rights to freedom of worship and peaceful assembly as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
Meanwhile, tension is reportedly rising in Ekid communities following the arrest of Princess Udoito, a land and environmental rights advocate. Women from Eket and Esit Eket local government areas have threatened mass protests and a boycott of government activities unless she is released, accusing the state government of suppressing dissent over issues linked to ancestral land.
HURIWA warned that democracy is endangered when critics are silenced through intimidation and reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained activist.
