Senator Sunday Steve Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, has announced an annual scholarship program for the children of his late constituent, Sunday Ojo, also known as Ajaga.
Ojo, a respected youth leader, community mobiliser, entrepreneur, and farmer from Ponyan in Yagba East Local Government Area, recently passed away after a brief illness. Senator Karimi described his death as a painful loss, not just to his family and immediate community, but to the entire senatorial district.
“Sunday Ojo was a hardworking young man who pursued legitimate entrepreneurial endeavours. He supported settler farmers with resources from his modest means and was not involved in brigandage or violence, unlike some trends in contemporary politics,” Karimi said.
In honour of Ojo’s legacy, Senator Karimi pledged ₦1.5 million annually for the next four years to support the tertiary education of Ojo’s children, amounting to ₦6 million in total. The senator highlighted his longstanding commitment to education in Kogi West, noting that the 2025/2026 statewide scholarship programme will cost ₦300 million, following an initial ₦139 million awarded in the previous cycle.
“Education has always been the fulcrum of my interventions for our people. Over the next four years, we will support Sunday Ojo’s children in pursuing advanced education, ensuring his legacy continues through them,” Karimi said.
Responding on behalf of the family, Engr Kayode Adegbayo, a prominent businessman and politician from Ponyan, expressed gratitude for the senator’s generosity:
“Senator, your support lifts a heavy burden from Sunday Ojo’s family. His children’s education would have suffered after his untimely passing, but you have stepped in—not as a politician, but as a true African father and brother’s keeper,” Adegbayo said.
He further encouraged the people of Kogi West to continue supporting their elected leaders as they work to impact communities positively.
