The Kogi State Government has earmarked 30,000 hectares of land for all-year-round farming to increase food production and strengthen food security across the state.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Timothy Ojomah, during a press briefing on Friday in Lokoja. He revealed that the government had initially allocated 8,000 hectares in 2024 but expanded the scope to 30,000 hectares for 2025 due to the success of the initiative.
“The impact of last year’s farming activities is evident. According to data from the Bureau of Statistics, the cost of food items has reduced significantly in Kogi, placing us among states with the lowest food prices in the country,” Ojomah said.
The Commissioner highlighted the enthusiasm of farmers in the state, stating that over 60,000 applications had been received for the 30,000 hectares, reflecting the growing interest in agriculture.
“This level of interest shows that more people are embracing farming, motivated by government interventions aimed at improving food production and reducing hunger,” he added.
Ojomah also outlined plans to enhance the state’s agricultural value chain, including the establishment of Free Trade Zones and partnerships with Chinese firms and the World Bank to build processing industries.
He noted that the government recently approved a three-month smart agriculture training program for 50 youths. “When these youths return, they will train others, ensuring we maximize the benefits of agriculture through processing, packaging, and export,” he explained.
The commissioner revealed ongoing efforts to expand the Omi Dam, enabling the cultivation of 4,000 hectares of rice to support the Alape Rice Mill. Additionally, the state is partnering with Silvex International to establish a large-scale mechanized rice farm in the Omi area, with a focus on year-round production.
“With the Omi Dam and mechanized farming, Kogi State is set to become a leader in rice production and food security. Governor Ododo is committed to making Kogi a food production powerhouse,” Ojomah said.
The state’s comprehensive agricultural initiatives aim to boost local food supply, create jobs, and position Kogi as a key player in Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
