Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to immediately release 52 Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students who were arrested and detained following protests against kidnappings and insecurity in Ekpoma.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Senator described the arrests as a dangerous suppression of youth voices and a violation of the students’ constitutional rights.
“Governor Okpebholo must release these students without delay. Dialogue, not detention, is the pathway to peace and progress,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “Our youths must not be criminalised for speaking up on issues that affect their welfare, environment, and future.”
She criticised the Edo State authorities for their handling of the situation, urging the government to prioritise tackling kidnappings and insecurity rather than silencing young, discerning voices.
“Arresting students only deepens mistrust and widens the gap between government and citizens. Governor Okpebholo must act responsibly and uphold the constitutional right to peaceful protest,” the Senator added.
Akpoti-Uduaghan reaffirmed her solidarity with the detained students and their families, insisting that their release is urgent for the protection of democratic values and youth empowerment.
