Bandits Torch Niger Village Market, Leave 30 Dead, Scores Abducted

Fresh violence has rocked Niger State as suspected bandits stormed a bustling village market in Borgu Local Government Area, killing no fewer than 30 people and abducting many others.
The attackers, believed to be operating from the Kainji Lake National Park forest, struck Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, accessed through Kabe District. Eyewitness accounts said the assailants arrived heavily armed, opened fire on traders and residents, and set large sections of the market ablaze.
Foodstuffs and other wares were reportedly looted before the gunmen forced several villagers to trek with them toward the forest, heightening fears over the fate of the abducted victims.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said a joint security team had visited the area. Police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that over 30 lives were lost during the attack, while several others were kidnapped.
He added that security agencies have launched operations aimed at rescuing the abducted persons and restoring calm to the affected communities.
The attack has once again raised concerns over the growing insecurity around forest-bordering communities in Niger State, particularly those near the Kainji Lake National Park.
