Women in Akwa Ibom’s riverine communities received a significant economic boost during the Yuletide as Senate President Godswill Akpabio distributed outboard-engine fishing boats to women and cooperative societies in the Eket Senatorial District.
The presentation, which took place on Boxing Day at Akpabio’s country home in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area, formed part of his constituency intervention aimed at strengthening livelihoods in fishing-dependent communities across the state.
Beneficiaries were selected from coastal and riverine settlements where fishing remains the primary source of income, with the initiative designed to improve productivity, income stability and self-reliance among women.
Speaking at the event, the wife of the Senate President, Dr. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, described the intervention as a deliberate effort to support women whose economic survival depends on access to modern fishing tools. She noted that the selection of beneficiaries from Eket Senatorial District reflected a broader commitment to inclusive development across Akwa Ibom.
In his remarks, Akpabio acknowledged the critical role women have played in the social and economic life of the state, stressing that empowerment, rather than handouts, remains the most sustainable path to development.
“These women have stood by us with their prayers and support. Empowering their means of livelihood is both a responsibility and a priority,” he said.
The Senate President also commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for prioritising human capital development and grassroots welfare, urging residents to continue supporting initiatives that promote economic growth and social stability.
Providing details of the equipment, the Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Victor Antai, said each boat was fitted with fishing nets, refrigerators and auxiliary fuel tanks, while the engines ranged from 40-horsepower units for smaller boats to twin 75-horsepower engines for larger vessels.
He explained that the comprehensive setup was intended to enhance safety, efficiency and preservation of fish harvests, thereby increasing earnings for the beneficiaries.
Responding on behalf of the women, Mma Nkoyo Isong expressed gratitude to Akpabio and his wife, describing the donation as a transformative intervention that would strengthen household incomes and reduce economic vulnerability in riverine communities.
“This is not charity; it is empowerment. We have been given the tools to work, grow and sustain our families,” she said.
Only a few boats were displayed during the ceremony for symbolic presentation, while the names of individual beneficiaries and cooperative societies were formally announced.
