The National Assembly has sought to calm public anxiety surrounding the passage, presidential assent, and gazetting of four major fiscal laws, assuring Nigerians that all issues raised are being handled in line with constitutional provisions and established legislative procedures.
The Acts involved are the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025; and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025.
In a statement issued by Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, Director of Information to the Clerk of the National Assembly, the legislature said it was mindful of public concerns, particularly those relating to the harmonisation of bills passed by both Chambers, the versions transmitted for presidential assent, and the copies later published in the Official Gazette.
According to the statement, the leadership of the National Assembly, working through its relevant committees and management, has commenced an internal review of its institutional processes to ensure clarity, accuracy, and integrity of the legislative record.
“The review is being conducted strictly in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Acts Authentication Act, Cap. A4, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the Standing Orders of both Chambers, and established parliamentary practice,” the statement said.
As part of measures to strengthen public confidence, the Clerk to the National Assembly has been directed to facilitate the proper gazetting of the Acts and to issue Certified True Copies of the assented laws to any stakeholder or member of the public upon request.
The National Assembly stressed that this step is purely administrative and aimed at authenticating and formally reflecting the decisions of the legislature. It clarified that the ongoing review does not suggest any defect in the exercise of legislative authority by either the Senate or the House of Representatives.
“The review is confined to internal procedures and does not prejudice the powers or functions of any other arm or agency of government,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to constitutionalism, transparency, and the separation of powers, the National Assembly urged Nigerians to allow the review process to proceed without speculation, noting that any necessary procedural refinements would be addressed in line with the law.
The statement concluded by assuring the public that the leadership of both Chambers remains committed to faithfully discharging its responsibilities as the custodian of Nigeria’s legislative authority, promising to provide further updates as required.
