Obasanjo Attends Aso Rock Christmas Service, Marking First Appearance Under Tinubu

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday made a notable appearance at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, attending the 2025 Service of Nine Lessons and Carols hosted by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. The visit marked his first presence at Aso Rock since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.
President Tinubu was absent from the service, which drew prominent figures including former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. Obasanjo’s attendance is significant given his prior public criticism of the current administration and his absence from key state events, including meetings of the Council of State.
The former president delivered the Second Lesson from Genesis 22:15–18, reflecting on God’s covenant of blessing through obedience. General Gowon read the First Lesson from Genesis 3:8–12, while the First Lady read the Ninth Lesson from John 1:1–14, after which the congregation sang O Come, All Ye Faithful.
Obasanjo’s presence comes against the backdrop of past tensions, including his pointed remarks on Nigeria’s international standing during his tenure and recent criticisms of the current government. The service, themed “Emmanuel: God With Us,” continues the annual Christian tradition of reflection and celebration during the Christmas season.
