Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Mourns Senator Okey Ezea: A Quiet Pillar of Wisdom Lost

The Senate was thrown into mourning yesterday following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, the Enugu North lawmaker widely regarded by colleagues as one of the chamber’s calmest, wisest voices. Among the most emotional tributes came from Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who said the late legislator’s quiet strength had carried her through some of her most difficult moments in public life.
Describing his death as a personal and institutional loss, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said Ezea was “a good man—wise and gentle”, whose prayers and counsel provided steady guidance during her darkest hours in the Senate.
“Rest in peace, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea. You were a good man—wise and gentle. Your prayers kept me going through my darkest moments, and I will miss you in chambers,” she wrote.
Her tribute underscored a side of the late senator rarely captured in public: a man whose influence was measured not in noise or drama, but in the quiet reassurance he offered colleagues navigating the pressures of national service.
Born on August 11, 1963, Ezea was a lawyer, businessman, and one of the most prominent political figures to emerge from Enugu North. Elected on the Labour Party platform in the 2023 general elections, he became the lone National Assembly member from Enugu State after a wave of court verdicts reshaped the state’s political representation. Despite the turbulence, he maintained a reputation for humility, depth, and steadfastness.
His death on Tuesday in the United Kingdom, where he was receiving medical treatment after earlier interventions in Germany, came as a shock to many who had hoped he was responding to care.
The news was first confirmed on Facebook by popular on-air personality ‘Senator’ Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, who broke the silence with a brief message: “Sad news. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.”
Beyond Enugu, Senator Ezea’s passing has stirred grief across the country. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said the people of Kogi Central stand firmly with Enugu North in this moment of loss.
“Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honors your Senator and mourns with you,” she said.
As colleagues in the National Assembly brace for an official announcement and burial plans, the memory of Senator Okey Ezea is set to endure—not as a loud political force, but as a steady soul whose quiet wisdom left its imprint on all who worked with him.
