Ododo Charts New Fiscal Path with ₦820bn ‘Shared Prosperity’ Budget

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has unveiled a draft ₦820.49 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, signaling a bold push toward shared prosperity, sustainable growth, and inclusive governance.

Tagged “Budget of Shared Prosperity: Driving Sustainable Growth for All,” the proposal represents a 35.7 percent increase—about ₦215.96 billion—over the state’s ₦604.53 billion revised 2025 budget.

The draft budget, approved at the State Executive Council meeting, reflects Ododo’s determination to expand the state’s economic base, improve service delivery, and consolidate ongoing reforms.

Presenting the estimates, the Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, said the 2026 plan was designed to sustain the administration’s development momentum while building resilience against fiscal shocks.

According to him, the budget projects ₦470.01 billion in recurrent revenue and ₦350.48 billion in capital receipts. Expenditure is evenly balanced, with ₦360.67 billion set aside for recurrent spending and ₦459.82 billion for capital projects — a strong tilt toward infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and social welfare.

Idris said the budget prioritizes initiatives to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), strengthen public-private partnerships (PPP), and promote ease of doing business in the state. It also includes targeted interventions to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal through social protection, rural development, and support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

He noted that the draft was developed through extensive stakeholder engagement, including town hall meetings and consultations with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to ensure that citizens’ voices directly shape fiscal priorities.

Governor Ododo assured that the 2026 fiscal plan would consolidate the gains recorded in 2025 while deepening transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance.

“The 2026 budget embodies our commitment to shared prosperity. We are determined to drive a Kogi economy that works for everyone—rural or urban, young or old,” Ododo said.

The draft budget is expected to be laid before the Kogi State House of Assembly in the coming weeks for consideration and passage.
