At 65, Nigeria’s Real Heroes Are the People — Dumebi Kachikwu

Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has described Nigerians as the “true custodians of hope and the real heroes of nationhood,” praising their resilience in the face of decades of unfulfilled promises.

In his Independence Day message on Tuesday, Kachikwu said while the nation reflects on the sacrifices of its founding fathers, the greater sacrifices have been borne by ordinary Nigerians who continue to endure hardship while clinging to the hope of a better future.

“Our people, overburdened and voiceless, have carried the weight of failed leadership for decades. Yet, they choose peace where frustration could have torn the nation apart. Today, I celebrate their silent heroism,” he said.

Quoting the Bible, Kachikwu warned that “hope deferred makes the heart sick” and challenged the nation’s leaders to answer the urgent questions of the masses: “When will the Nigeria of their dreams emerge? When will this country work for everyone, irrespective of tribe, tongue, or religion?”

The ADC chieftain urged Nigerians not to give up faith, expressing optimism that a better Nigeria remains possible if leaders rise to the responsibility of fulfilling their promises.

“On this Independence Day, I salute the courage, patience, and patriotism of the Nigerian people. You remain the true heroes of our nation,” he declared.
