The Federal Government has announced fresh steps to strengthen seed certification in a bid to guarantee food security and tackle the rising cost of food across the country.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, disclosed this on Tuesday during a working visit to the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kiyari, in Abuja.

The high-level meeting focused on practical reforms to improve Nigeria’s agricultural output, including wider access to certified, high-yield seeds, the creation of a decentralised seed certification system with strict quality checks, and the roll-out of the upcoming dry season farming programme.

Mr. Edun stressed that access to quality seeds is the foundation of agricultural productivity. He added that the reforms will not only boost farmers’ yields but also help to reduce food inflation, attract private sector investment, and drive long-term economic growth.

Senator Kiyari welcomed the partnership, describing it as another demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to aligning fiscal and agricultural policies to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.

With preparations for dry season farming already underway, both ministries assured farmers and stakeholders that concrete measures are being put in place to make improved seeds available nationwide.
