Nigeria’s media community is reeling from shock after Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a promising news anchor and producer with ARISE News Channel, was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja, early Monday morning.
Maduagwu, 29, popularly called “Sommie” by colleagues, was widely admired for her charm, intellect, and professionalism on screen. Before venturing into journalism, she trained as a lawyer, a background many said enriched her reporting style.
In a statement mourning her passing, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of our family, whose warmth and voice touched millions. Though her voice has been silenced, her spirit, passion, and legacy will remain with us.”

Police authorities confirmed an investigation has begun into the deadly attack, pledging to identify and prosecute those behind the crime.
Maduagwu’s colleagues and admirers across Nigeria flooded social media with tributes, hailing her as one of the brightest young talents in broadcasting and lamenting a life and career cut short.
Born on December 26, 1995, Somtochukwu’s trajectory embodied the ambition and promise of a new generation of Nigerian journalists.
She is survived by her parents, siblings, and loved ones—now joined by the wider media fraternity in mourning a voice stilled far too soon.
