Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has urged journalists to uphold truth and accuracy in reporting development issues, warning that sensationalism and inflammatory content could undermine public trust and threaten peace.

Buni gave the charge on Wednesday in Kano during the closing ceremony of a three-day training workshop for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Represented by Secretary to the State Government Baba Malam Wali, the governor stressed the importance of responsible journalism in an era of rapidly evolving information technology and media innovation.

“Journalists must guard and wield their pens and devices with a deep sense of responsibility, recognizing the impact their words can have on communities,” he said.

Reflecting on Yobe’s recent history, Buni recalled the devastating effects of Boko Haram’s 16-year insurgency on the state’s social fabric and economy. He noted, however, that significant progress has been made in rebuilding and restoring peace in affected communities.

Beyond accuracy in reporting, Buni emphasized that journalists play a critical role in shaping societal narratives. By prioritizing truth and responsible journalism, he said, they can promote social harmony, peace, and development in Yobe State and beyond.

“Your commitment to upholding truth and accuracy will be critical to promoting peace, unity, and development,” the governor declared.
