Tension gripped Kogi State on Wednesday after unknown gunmen ambushed and killed three police officers at a checkpoint in Egbe, a border town with Kwara State.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the attack, describing it as a cowardly assault that occurred in the early hours along the Egbe–Okunran Road.

On receiving the report, Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye deployed a tactical squad to the area. Aya said the team, working with other security agencies, is tracking the attackers.
“Three of our officers on duty were killed today in Egbe,” Aya stated. “The Commissioner has deployed a tactical squad. We are on their trail, and they will be arrested.”
The Executive Chairman of Yagba West Local Government, Hon. Tosin Olokun, in a condolence message, mourned the fallen officers, describing them as “courageous men who paid the supreme price to keep Yagba West safe.”
Olokun assured the police and bereaved families that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. He also issued a 24-hour ultimatum for herders who recently migrated into the area to vacate Yagba West, pledging stronger collaboration with security agencies to prevent further attacks.
The killings underscore growing security concerns in Kogi’s border communities, where armed incursions and violent crimes have been on the rise in recent months.
