Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has sounded a stark warning that Nigeria’s democracy may be on the brink of collapse if internal party intrigues and attempts to shield powerful figures from accountability continue unchecked.
In a strongly worded statement posted on his Facebook page, Lamido alleged that some PDP state chairmen were recently summoned by “powerful lords of Nigeria” and directed to resist disciplinary action against Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and his loyalists.
He described the move as a dangerous plot capable of hastening the PDP’s disintegration and further destabilizing Nigeria’s fragile democratic order.
“This desperation to hasten the collapse of the PDP will inevitably hasten the collapse of our nascent democracy, with dire consequences,” Lamido wrote.
The former governor stressed that safeguarding democracy must rise above partisan divides, urging both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition forces to act collectively.
“Let us all unite and save democracy — the APC government and all the opposition parties alike,” he appealed.
Lamido’s intervention comes amid deepening rifts within the PDP, where Wike and his allies are accused of working at odds with the party’s leadership. His warning underscores growing fears that unchecked factional battles could cripple the opposition’s effectiveness, leaving Nigeria’s democracy increasingly vulnerable.
