Kogi Flags Off 12.5Km Unosi-Odonto-Ogigiri Road

Communities in Ajaokuta Local Government Area are set to benefit from a major economic transformation following the commencement of construction on the 12.5-kilometre Unosi-Odonto-Ogigiri rural road. The project, under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), promises to unlock new opportunities for farmers, traders, and residents along the corridor.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described the road as a strategic lifeline that will connect farming communities to markets, schools, health centres, and social infrastructure, dramatically reducing travel time and transportation costs. “This is about more than asphalt and concrete; it is about unlocking the potential of our agricultural heartland and improving livelihoods,” the Governor said.

The corridor, situated in the agricultural hub of Ajaokuta, is expected to significantly boost food security by easing access to markets for farm produce. Residents will also receive training in routine road maintenance, ensuring the sustainability of the infrastructure and empowering communities to take ownership of local development.

National Coordinator of RAAMP, Engr. Aminu Bodinga,  emphasized that the initiative aligns with broader development priorities aimed at rural resilience and agricultural productivity. With Kogi State set to receive up to 1,500 kilometres of rural roads under the current administration, the Unosi-Odonto-Ogigiri road represents a critical step in reducing post-harvest losses and fostering inclusive growth.

Local leaders praised the project as a catalyst for economic empowerment. Hon. Abdulraheem Sani Egidi, representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, noted that the road will transform the fortunes of rural communities, while Ajaokuta LGA Chairman Haruna Aliyu highlighted its role in connecting 10 of the area’s 14 wards. Residents expressed optimism that improved access will boost trade, commerce, and overall living standards.

With the project now underway, the state government signals a commitment to bridging infrastructure gaps in rural areas and reinforcing agriculture as a key driver of economic development in Kogi State.
