Sowore Freed! But He Says the Struggle Is Far From Over

Omoyele Sowore, fiery human rights activist, journalist, and face of the #RevolutionNow movement, has walked out of police custody — but not into celebration.

After days in what he blasted as “unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention,” Sowore took to social media Friday evening to thank supporters for their unrelenting pressure that forced the Nigeria Police Force to back down.

“The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal & unwarranted detention,” he declared. “However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up! #RevolutionNow.”

His arrest earlier this week sent shockwaves through civil society, sparking protests, condemnation from human rights defenders, and scrutiny from international observers. Rights groups called it a direct assault on freedom of expression and the right to protest.

Police claimed he was detained for refusing to write a statement over two petitions filed against him — a charge critics see as flimsy and politically motivated.

For Sowore, this is just the latest chapter in a relentless campaign against government policies he says keep Nigerians in chains. His message after release was clear: the fight continues.
