The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dissociated itself from a controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja on Friday, July 25, describing it as illegal, unconstitutional, and not sanctioned by the party.
In an official circular signed by the SDP National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) said the meeting, convened by a law firm identified as Probity Law Firm, lacks legitimacy and has no backing from the national leadership.
“The NWC, at its meeting today, resolved to completely dissociate itself and the national leadership of our great party from the so-called NEC meeting,” the circular read.
Party officials traced the planned meeting to three individuals—Messrs Bissallah, Modibbo, and Ekpeyong—who were allegedly warned and directed to discontinue the move after being briefed on the party’s constitutional procedures. Despite the warning, the trio reportedly continued their efforts to hold the meeting.
In a further twist, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is said to have refused to recognize the proposed NEC session. Additionally, 13 State Chairmen submitted sworn affidavits through their lawyers to INEC, disclaiming any involvement and alleging their signatures were misused without authorization.
Dr. Agunloye warned party officers, especially state chairmen, not to participate in the meeting, cautioning that such actions could attract sanctions under the SDP Constitution.
The SDP is currently battling internal wrangling ahead of key political decisions, and this development may further deepen factional lines within the party.
