What was meant to be a peaceful celebration in honour of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, turned into a security standoff in Kaduna as the police moved swiftly to shut down a planned birthday rally, citing credible intelligence of a potential security breach.
The Kaduna State Police Command said the rally, organized by supporters of Mr. Obi, posed a serious risk of being hijacked by non-state actors. In a statement that sent shockwaves through the political space, the command warned that criminal elements were planning to infiltrate the gathering to incite violence and disrupt public order.
“This is not about Peter Obi or his supporters. It’s about protecting lives and preventing what could spiral into chaos,” said DSP Mansir Hassan, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state.
Hassan added that the ban on all political gatherings remains in force across the state, in line with the directive that no campaign-related event can be held until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gives the green light.
The rally, which had been framed by organizers as a symbolic show of love and solidarity for Obi on his 64th birthday, has now become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing tension between political engagement and state security enforcement.
Critics of the move argue that the police action stifles civic expression and sends a troubling message about the freedom of peaceful assembly. But security officials insist they are acting on solid intelligence to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
As the Obidient movement continues to grow across Nigeria, Saturday’s aborted rally highlights the fine line between political enthusiasm and the complex realities of pre-election security management.
