The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London, United Kingdom.
In an official statement released on Monday, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, Esq., announced that plenary sessions in both the Senate and the House of Representatives have been rescheduled to resume on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to honour the late leader’s memory and allow lawmakers to participate fully in the national burial arrangements.
The decision was jointly taken by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House, who described Buhari’s passing as the loss of a statesman who embodied discipline, service, and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s unity.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to the nation’s unity and his enduring legacy of integrity,” the statement read.
Lawmakers across party lines are expected to join in the series of official mourning activities planned in honour of the late former President, whose impact on Nigeria’s democratic journey spanned over four decades—from military rule to civilian leadership.
The leadership of both chambers extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, the people of Katsina State, and the Buhari family, praying for Almighty Allah to grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
The atmosphere at the National Assembly complex in Abuja was sombre on Monday, with flags flying at half-mast and staff observing a moment of silence in memory of the former Commander-in-Chief.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, leaves behind a complex legacy marked by anti-corruption efforts, national security reforms, and deep convictions about governance and morality.
