The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strong and unequivocal warning to criminal elements using the name of the group to perpetrate violence and unrest across the South-East region, declaring such acts as sabotage against the Biafran struggle and a betrayal of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a powerful statement signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said it was deeply concerned about a disturbing surge in violent activities including kidnappings, extortion, targeted assassinations, and arson in parts of Enugu, Imo, Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi states.
“Let the world hear this clearly: IPOB is not, and has never been, a violent organization,” the statement said. “Those kidnapping, killing, or enforcing illegal sit-at-home orders are not part of IPOB. They are enemies of Biafra.”
The group stressed that its approach to the Biafra cause remains rooted in peaceful agitation, legal processes, and diplomatic engagement, not terrorism or criminality.
It specifically called out individuals parading as “commanders” or “enforcers” who have resorted to violence and intimidation, warning that such actions are not authorized by IPOB and would be treated as treasonable acts against its mission and leadership.
“These acts of terror are designed to destroy the very people we swore to defend. Anyone who hides under the sacred banner of IPOB to commit crime is a traitor and will be exposed,” Emma Powerful said.
The group also decried what it described as state-sponsored attacks and black operations allegedly aimed at discrediting IPOB and complicating the legal case of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose detention continues in violation of multiple court rulings.
“We are aware of covert attempts by security agents to stage chaos and pin it on IPOB. But our people know the truth. We will not be provoked into abandoning our disciplined path,” the statement read.
IPOB called on its supporters across the South-East and in the diaspora to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, urging them not to fall for provocations designed to derail the peaceful pursuit of Biafra’s independence.
“We do not compel obedience with fear. We do not destroy lives or burn communities. Those who do so in our name are either criminals or state agents—and both will face justice,” the group warned.
The statement ended with a rallying call to all members to uphold the core values of the movement and preserve the integrity of the Biafran cause.
“We are IPOB. We are focused. We are disciplined. We are not killers—we are freedom fighters. The time for clarity is now. No more hiding under our name to commit evil.”
