PDP Survives the Storm: Saraki Hails Unity at 100th NEC Meeting

In what many feared would be a breaking point for Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) instead found strength in unity, as it concluded its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting amid tension and external disruption.
Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, a key figure in the party’s national leadership, described the outcome as a symbolic victory not just for the PDP, but for Nigeria’s democracy.
“There was no victor, no vanquished. The winner today is the PDP — and more importantly, Nigeria’s democracy,” Saraki said in a statement following the crucial gathering.
Held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the meeting came just hours after a surprise police presence threatened to disrupt proceedings. But party leaders defied the odds, convening in what Saraki described as a defining moment for the PDP’s future.
“This meeting could have been a breaking point,” he said. “But our leaders chose instead to cross the Rubicon and move forward together.”
According to Saraki, leaders at the NEC meeting resolved to bury their differences, rebuild internal trust, and recommit to the PDP’s mission as the nation’s leading opposition voice.
The former Senate President noted that the spirit of “give and take” prevailed throughout the deliberations, which were marked by frank dialogue and reconciliatory undertones, pointing to a broader effort to reposition the PDP ahead of future national contests.
“We agreed on unity — to send a strong message to Nigerians that the PDP is not just intact, but ready to offer credible leadership,” he added.
Saraki also hailed the millions of PDP supporters across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, calling them “true winners” in a moment that reaffirmed the party’s democratic soul.
With the 100th NEC now in the rearview mirror, observers say the PDP may have avoided implosion — but its journey toward 2027 has only just begun.
