As part of activities marking the 2025 International Widows’ Day, the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), Niger State chapter, has donated food items and cash to widows across the state.
Beneficiaries drawn from CAN blocs and other organizations received packs of salt, seasoning, detergent, and financial support.
Speaking at the event, Niger State CAN Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, represented by Rev. Joshua Marcus, urged families to treat widows with dignity and not as part of a deceased man’s estate.
“It is heartbreaking when widows are treated as property. They deserve respect and support, not dispossession,” he said.
He also encouraged widows to become self-reliant and focus on raising their children, urging them to explore entrepreneurship if unemployed.
WOWICAN Chairperson, Evang. Ladi Nuhu, speaking on the theme “Empowering Widows: Building Resilience, Restoring Dignity”, reminded widows of their value and encouraged them to embrace independence and faith.
“Now is the time to rise for your children. You are not forgotten—Isaiah 54:5-6 reminds us that God has a special place for widows,” she said.
Other participating groups, including FOMWAN, Women in Dawah, and Working with Widows Initiative, echoed the call for widows to remain strong, empowered, and hopeful.
