National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has identified persistent rifts between state governors and their deputies as a major impediment to democratic governance and party cohesion in Nigeria.
Dr. Ganduje made the observation while receiving Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, on a courtesy visit to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.
According to the APC Chairman, the frequent breakdown in relationships between top political officeholders, particularly at the state level, has become a recurring challenge that the party must urgently address.
“These disputes not only affect governance but also threaten the stability of our democratic institutions,” Ganduje noted. “The crisis between governors and their deputies, and even between successors and predecessors, must be curtailed. The party will look into practical ways to resolve and prevent such tensions.”
He, however, commended Governor Ododo for sustaining a cordial and respectful relationship with his predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, describing it as exemplary and worthy of replication across the states.
In his remarks, Governor Ododo said he visited the APC Secretariat to seek further direction from party leadership as he continues to steer the affairs of Kogi State.
He highlighted the achievements of his administration in the area of security, stating, “Under my watch, Kogi is no longer fertile ground for criminals, kidnappers, or bandits. We have taken decisive action to secure our people.”
Governor Ododo also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership for entrusting him with the opportunity to serve, especially as one of the youngest governors in the country.
