The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
This was announced on Sunday by the Ministry of Interior in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The holiday was approved by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government.
The declaration is coming just days after the government also announced Monday, June 9, as a public holiday to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, making it the second national holiday of the week.
Speaking on the significance of June 12, Tunji-Ojo described it as a day to honour Nigeria’s democratic evolution. “June 12 reminds us of the importance of truth, justice, and unity in shaping our future. It stands as a symbol of our progress and democratic resilience,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey over the past 26 years, describing it as a testament to national perseverance and commitment to civilian governance. He also reiterated the Tinubu administration’s resolve to uphold democratic values and ensure the voice of the people continues to shape Nigeria’s development.
While the public holiday applies to federal institutions and most private organizations, essential services and some private enterprises may remain open based on operational requirements.
June 12 was designated as Democracy Day in 2018 in honour of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election—widely acclaimed as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll—and the enduring struggle for democratic rule.
