Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has made good on his earlier indication to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), formally joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday in Uyo.
The move followed a statement he made during a town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi, where he declared, “It is time to move,” signaling his readiness to align Akwa Ibom with the APC-led federal government. According to Eno, the decision came after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state.
The official defection was marked by the presence of top APC figures, including several governors who traveled to Akwa Ibom to welcome him into the party. Those in attendance were:
Hope Uzodimma – Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum
Bassey Otu – Governor of Cross River State
Babajide Sanwo-Olu – Governor of Lagos State
Dapo Abiodun – Governor of Ogun State
Sheriff Oborevwori – Governor of Delta State
Monday Okpebholo – Governor of Edo State
Francis Nwifuru – Governor of Ebonyi State
Governor Eno’s defection is seen as a calculated political move aimed at strengthening the state’s relationship with the federal government.
It also signals a possible realignment of forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
