****Moves to Expel Lawmaker, Initiate Recall Over Financial Misconduct, Fake AGF Memo
The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, member of the House of Representatives, over his alleged circulation of a forged document claimed to have originated from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described Ogene’s actions as “reckless, criminal, and dangerous to the integrity of national institutions.” The party accused the lawmaker of weaponizing falsehoods, inciting division, and engaging in cyber-bullying by spreading unverified content on social media.
“This is not just political mischief — it’s a national security issue,” Ifoh said. “No lawmaker has the right to possess, let alone circulate, classified documents from the AGF or the Nigeria Police. If such a document even exists, how did it end up in Ogene’s hands? He must be arrested and interrogated immediately.”
The document in question allegedly recommends the prosecution of Julius Abure and three others—Farouk Umar Ibrahim, Nkwegu Edward Okereke, and Ojukwu Clement—based on a petition by Splendour Oko Eze, the LP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State. Eze had accused the party leadership of forging documents to falsely indicate his withdrawal from the race.
Ogene claimed that a forensic investigation revealed the withdrawal letter and Labour Party membership card submitted to INEC were forged, and that the affidavit supporting the withdrawal was not deposed to by Eze himself. The memo, allegedly dated March 7, 2025, was reportedly signed by M.B. Abubakar of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
But the Abure-led LP insisted the document is fake and politically motivated, accusing Ogene of peddling a forgery in a bid to destroy the party from within.
“Ogene is dragging respected institutions through the mud in pursuit of a vendetta. He is not only undermining the party but attempting to incite the public against state institutions. His actions are disgraceful and must be met with the full weight of the law,” Ifoh charged.
The party further accused the lawmaker of failing to account for funds contributed by LP lawmakers in the National Assembly to support party activities, alleging that he has been operating without transparency or accountability.
“Despite repeated demands, Hon. Ogene has refused to provide any explanation on how the money contributed by Labour Party lawmakers was used. His record is one of impunity and self-interest,” the statement noted.
Ogene, who is currently suspended by the Abure-led faction for anti-party activities and gross misconduct, now faces expulsion and a formal recall process by his constituents.
“If he continues to trade in lies, blackmail, and sabotage, we will have no choice but to permanently expel him from the party and activate a recall process to remove him from the National Assembly,” the party warned.
According to the LP, Ogene’s recent actions are part of a broader plot by disgruntled elements who failed to remove Abure as National Chairman through the courts and are now resorting to media warfare.
“Having lost at the Supreme Court and failed in their desperate court-shopping efforts in Zamfara, Ogene and his sponsors have resorted to forgery and propaganda. This is a coordinated campaign of vengeance against a leadership that refused to bow to pressure,” the statement added.
The Party’s fction concluded by affirming its commitment to defending the integrity of its leadership and protecting the trust of its members, warning that it will no longer tolerate the spread of falsehoods by those pursuing selfish political agendas.
“No one is above the law—not even a serving lawmaker. The Labour Party will stand firm against misinformation, internal sabotage, and abuse of public trust,” Ifoh stated.
