Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has already metastasized to his bones, according to a statement from his personal office released on Sunday.
The 81-year-old statesman was evaluated last week after reporting worsening urinary symptoms. Medical assessments confirmed the presence of a prostate nodule, which was later diagnosed as cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)—indicating one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.
Despite the severity of the diagnosis, his doctors note that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which opens the door for effective treatment strategies.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement said.
Biden and his family are currently consulting with specialists to determine the best treatment options going forward.
