***Rules Out Coalition Ahead of 2027, Congratulates Moghalu on Anambra Guber Ticket
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party, under the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure, has reaffirmed its recognition of his chairmanship and endorsed the National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the party’s 2024 National Convention.
At a press briefing held Friday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, Abure read out the resolutions adopted by the NEC, which declared the March 27 Nnewi convention valid and in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Labour Party’s internal guidelines.
He said NEC also ratified the ad-hoc delegates list from the 36 states and the FCT, declaring that the Abure-led leadership remains competent and committed to steering the party to electoral success.
According to him, the NEC set up a five-member disciplinary committee to investigate Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and other members over alleged anti-party activities.
The committee is chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and includes Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim (Secretary), Barr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa. They have two weeks to submit their report.
This comes amid a heated exchange between the party leadership and Governor Otti, who recently dismissed Abure’s claim to the national chairmanship, saying the LP chairman was “living in a fool’s paradise” in light of the Supreme Court’s decision.
However, the NEC reaffirmed its confidence in Abure’s leadership and praised the Supreme Court’s April 4 judgment, which upheld the autonomy of political parties and the authority of their recognized organs.
Moving forward, the NEC ruled out entering into any coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that the party would instead focus on rebuilding its structure and intensifying grassroots mobilization.
The NEC also congratulated Chief George Moghalu on emerging as the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State Governorship Election, following a successful primary held in Awka on April 5.
