President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, has paid glowing tribute to the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, hailing him as “Nigeria’s Gladiator of Truth.”
In a heartfelt message dated April 30, 2025, following the passing of the 96-year-old elder statesman, Dr. Adesina hailed Pa Adebanjo as one of Nigeria’s most formidable voices for justice, equity, and true federalism.
“I say ‘celebrate’ because we wave goodbye to one of Nigeria’s foremost leaders, who lived every day of his life fighting for a better Nigeria. To live long is one thing, but to live long and impactfully is another. Pa Ayo Adebanjo lived impactfully long,” Adesina said.
He praised Pa Adebanjo as a national icon and a democratic gladiator of renowned repute:
“Pa Ayo Adebanjo was Nigeria’s Gladiator of Truth. We celebrate the exit of a true conscience of our nation — a man who fought tirelessly to expand the democratic space, give voice to the forgotten and marginalized, and speak truth to power.”
Adesina described Pa Adebanjo as a man of integrity, whose words cut through the hardest of hearts with honesty, purpose, and patriotism:
“A trailblazer who shaped our national consciousness, jolted us from our democratic slumber, and reminded us never to remove the ancient landmarks that assure Nigeria’s unity.”
Reflecting on his lifelong advocacy, Adesina added “Gladiators have scars to show for their battles. Pa Ayo Adebanjo had many scars. But like all great gladiators, he stood triumphant — undaunted, fearless, bold, brave, and unbowed.”
Drawing a biblical comparison, he likened the late elder statesman to a prophetic voice:
“Like John the Baptist, Pa Adebanjo was a lone voice in the wilderness announcing the coming of a new Nigeria — one where true federalism, inclusiveness, and unity will define our progress as a nation.”
In closing, Dr. Adesina offered condolences and gratitude:
“Pa Adebanjo, unlike John the Baptist, you were not beheaded — you simply headed home. Your words, like coals of fire, will continue to burn in our national consciousness. Your life was rich — not in money, but in values. Values that remind us that what is worth having is worth fighting for.
“Thank you for your sacrifices. Thank you for your legacy. Thank you for departing with great honor. Goodbye, Nigeria’s Gladiator of Truth.
“May God comfort your dear wife, Mama Adebanjo, your children and grandchildren. And may your soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of God, your Maker. Amen.”
