In a bold step to deepen institutional communication and streamline administrative operations, Bayero University Kano (BUK) has appointed seasoned journalist and public affairs strategist, Lamara Garba, as its new Director of Public Affairs.

The announcement, confirmed via a letter signed by the Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, marked a pivotal moment for the university’s public engagement strategy.
Lamara Garba, who has been serving as Deputy Registrar in charge of the directorate since 2021, brings over three decades of rich experience in journalism, public communication, and governance.

Garba, a BUK alumnus and doctoral candidate in Mass Communication at the university, previously held senior communication roles at the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
His leadership is expected to inject renewed focus and professionalism into BUK’s media relations, institutional branding, and stakeholder engagement.

Born in 1966 in Azare, Bauchi State, Garba rose to prominence through his incisive reporting with the New Nigerian Newspapers, and later as Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Kano.
His appointment is being celebrated as a strategic elevation rooted in institutional merit and national experience.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, described the appointment as “a reaffirmation of BUK’s commitment to leveraging excellence for institutional growth.”

The university also unveiled five additional high-level appointments as part of a broader administrative reorganization aimed at strengthening governance and service delivery. These include:

Hajiya Halima Shehu Hayatu as Director of General Administration

Hajiya Altine Maryam Ali as Director

Hajiya Anisatu Uwaisu Muhammad as Director

Dr. Garba Abdullahi Barume as Director

Malam Rabiu Ibrahim Maitafsiri as Director of Final Accounts and Reporting/Budget

Usman Gomina Ohikere as Director of Revenue and External Assistance/Expenditure

These appointments, drawn from a pool of accomplished professionals, are intended to reinforce accountability, enhance financial operations, and support the university’s long-term strategic goals.

With this new wave of leadership, BUK signals a renewed commitment to operational excellence and public engagement, positioning itself as a model of forward-thinking administration in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
