The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jigawa State chapter, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, describing it as a painful loss, especially during the Easter celebration.
Speaking during the Easter Monday gathering at the ASPC Church in the Jigawa Police Barracks, Dutse, the CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Maurice Koli Hassan, conveyed condolences to Catholics and Christians around the world.
“This is indeed a very sad moment, particularly for us Catholics and the global Christian community,” he said.
“Pope Francis was a spiritual father to all Christians, a symbol of unity and compassion. We woke up to the heartbreaking news of his death on Easter Day. His time has come, and we pray the Lord grants him eternal rest.”
Rev. Fr. Hassan said the Easter gathering brought together Christians from all 27 local government areas of Jigawa to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and its message of redemption, victory over death, and renewed hope.
“Easter is a celebration of peace and joy,” he explained. “It reminds us of God’s promises and Christ’s triumph. It is also a moment to pray for our country, especially as we face increasing insecurity and violence.”
He referenced recent tragic events in Nigeria, including:
The killing of 16 hunters in Irumi on March 27, the massacre of over 150 people in Plateau State last week and the murder of over 50 people in Benue State on Good Friday.
“These incidents are troubling and call for sober reflection. We must pray for peace in Nigeria,” he said. “Without peace, there can be no worship, no farming, no trade—life cannot continue.”
Rev. Fr. Hassan emphasized that Jesus’s farewell gift to His followers was peace, urging every Christian to become an agent of peace wherever they are.
“As Christians, we are carriers of Christ’s peace. The lesson of Easter is clear—let us live it out and promote peace in our homes, communities, and nation,” he concluded.
