In an emotional and symbolic meeting that has stirred the conscience of many Nigerians, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi met with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young boy whose harrowing story of unjust incarceration captured national attention.
Alabi is the 17-year-old who became known during the 2023 presidential election for standing in front of Obi’s convoy, the Photo of which went viral on Social media.
He regained his freedom after being held for nearly three months at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.
Obi, who shared the moment on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, described Quadri’s release as a victory for justice, courage, and compassion, praising the legal team led by Barr. Inibehe Effiong, as well as Dele Farotimi and Ms. Hassana Nurudeen, for their tireless advocacy.
“I listened to Quadri today, and one thing stood out clearly: his unwavering desire for education,” Obi wrote. “Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school — and I will make sure he gets it.”
Obi’s commitment to fully sponsor Quadri’s education is not only a lifeline for the young boy but a powerful symbol of hope for other youths caught in cycles of poverty and systemic injustice.
Quadri, who was detained without due process, represents a larger crisis of vulnerability among Nigeria’s less privileged — a problem Obi says must be addressed head-on.
But for the former Anambra governor, justice doesn’t end with freedom.
“We must not stop at his release. Those responsible for his illegal incarceration must be held accountable,” Obi stated. “As we strive to build a Nigeria where fairness and integrity prevail, we cannot afford to allow such acts of criminality to go unpunished.”
The meeting, which quickly went viral, has drawn widespread praise and reignited public discourse on the state of Nigeria’s legal system, youth protection, and access to education.
Obi’s message called for a national reflection on values such as rule of law, compassion, equity, and justice, describing them as the “foundation of our democracy.”
“Together, we will build a Nigeria where education, freedom, care and protection of the less privileged will stand as the bedrock of our future,” Obi affirmed.
For many, Quadri’s freedom is not just a personal win — it is a beacon. And with Obi’s support, the young boy’s journey from pain to purpose is just beginning.
