In a no-holds-barred media chat, former Rivers Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, shattered any illusions about unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring bluntly that the party is “not ready” for 2027 — and may be engineering its own downfall.
“Let’s stop deceiving ourselves,” Wike said. “The PDP is not studying for any exam — it’s pretending. Everyone sees it.”
Taking aim at both those advocating for a political alliance and those opposing it, Wike dismissed both camps as driven by personal interests rather than party values. “Nobody’s being sincere,” he stated. “What’s driving the conversation isn’t strategy — it’s ego.”
Wike accused the PDP of repeating the same errors that cost it dearly in 2023: internal impunity, disregard for zoning, and power hoarding by governors who now attempt to override party structures.
“The governors’ forum is acting like the National Working Committee,” he said. “They want to appoint a new secretary, form zoning committees, and take over decision-making. That’s not just unconstitutional — it’s dangerous.”
Referencing his fallout with the party during the 2022 primaries, Wike maintained that his opposition to Atiku Abubakar was rooted in principle, not bitterness. “Atiku made promises in 2019 and broke them. I couldn’t support him again,” he said.
He didn’t mince words about the PDP’s internal crisis. “If we don’t fix this now, there’s nothing to rig. We’ll already have lost.”
Known for his directness, Wike also defended his support for President Tinubu, insisting it was based on merit, not defection. “I didn’t need to join the APC to say someone is doing well,” he said. “But some people sneak to the Villa at night and deny it during the day. That’s cowardice.”
Wike concluded with a warning to his party: “If the PDP continues like this, I won’t support it in 2027. I don’t do guesswork or play games. Either we fix the party, or we fail — again.”
