Nigeria was plunged into mourning once again as over 50 lives were brutally snatched away in a fresh wave of violence in Bassa, Plateau State, barely 24 hours after a high-profile visit by former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to the region.
Visibly shaken by the news, Obi issued a scathing statement, condemning the attack as “unacceptable, coordinated, and deliberate.” The former Anambra State Governor, known for his empathy-driven leadership style, had only just concluded a solidarity visit to the state, a visit he described as emotionally charged and a reminder of the people’s unbroken resilience in the face of terror.
“To return from such a visit only to be confronted with another round of bloodshed is both painful and unacceptable,” Obi lamented.
“No nation can thrive when its citizens are slaughtered in their homes and communities without consequence.”
The latest attack deepens the agony of Plateau State, a region long wracked by a pattern of targeted killings. Describing the events as more than random violence, Obi echoed the sentiment of Governor Caleb Muftwang, insisting that the killings represent a “systematic and coordinated campaign of terror.”
In a sharply worded call to action, Obi urged the federal government to abandon platitudes and take “concrete, strategic action.”
He called for immediate deployment of reinforced security personnel and intelligence-led operations to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators.
“We cannot continue to mourn our fellow citizens daily while those responsible walk free,” he said. “Justice must be swift, transparent, and total.”
Beyond condemnation, Obi’s statement highlighted a grim reality—Nigerians are fast losing faith in a government unable or unwilling to protect them. His words, saturated with grief and urgency, reflect a broader national mood of despair and anger.
