_In this reflective piece, the spotlight falls on His Excellency, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, whose leadership at Bayero University Kano signals a quiet but powerful transformation.

Since stepping into his role as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 15th Governing Council in July 2024, Dr. Gawuna has sown seeds of progress—championing innovation, nurturing opportunity, and building bridges between vision and reality. From scholarships that uplift young women in science to a groundbreaking technology institute that promises to reshape research in Northern Nigeria, his efforts speak of a leader deeply attuned to the rhythm of change. Guided by experience in governance and public service, and in harmony with Vice Chancellor Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, his tenure paints a hopeful portrait of BUK’s future—a future where the university rises, steady and bold, into new realms of possibility.

In the dynamic world of academia, where ideas shape futures and leadership defines direction, some figures emerge not just as administrators but as architects of transformation. One such figure is Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 15th Governing Council of Bayero University Kano (BUK)—a name now closely linked with foresight, service, and meaningful progress.

    Dr. Nasiru Gawuna

Since his inauguration on July 4, 2024, Dr. Gawuna has shown a deep commitment to uplifting Bayero University, setting in motion a wave of initiatives that are steadily reshaping BUK’s academic and infrastructural landscape. His goal is clear: to leave the university better than he found it. And in less than a year, the results speak volumes.

Dr. Gawuna’s career reflects a remarkable blend of public service and strategic leadership. With a background spanning healthcare, business, administration, and politics, he offers a rare combination of technical knowledge and real-world governance experience.

His tenure as Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2018 to 2023 under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was marked by active engagement and cooperative leadership. Prior to that, he served as Commissioner for Agriculture from 2014 to 2022—where he spearheaded several programs that boosted agricultural productivity and empowered rural communities.

Earlier still, Dr. Gawuna held the role of Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, where he built a reputation as a focused and people-oriented leader. Each of these roles shaped a practical and results-driven style that now benefits the Bayero University community.

Even before assuming office as Council Chairman, Dr. Gawuna had already been supporting BUK in impactful ways. Notably, he awarded scholarships to about 100 female science students—a gesture that highlights both his commitment to academic opportunity and his belief in the power of women in science and technology.

Such acts of generosity reflect more than personal goodwill; they reveal his deeper interest in shaping a more equitable and promising educational landscape.

Among the many achievements under Dr. Gawuna’s watch, one stands out for its long-term impact: the establishment of a multi-billion naira Technology Institute within BUK, a project backed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

Designed as a center for innovation and research, this institute will not only enhance the university’s infrastructure but will also act as a regional hub for technology and scientific advancement across Northern Nigeria. It opens the door to collaboration, invention, and new opportunities for both students and faculty.

Further solidifying his developmental drive, Dr. Gawuna met with Alhaji Shu’aibu Idris Mikati, National President of the BUK Alumni Association, to explore partnerships that could bring more capital projects and developmental support to the institution.

While physical development is important, Dr. Gawuna and his Governing Council have also directed their focus inward—to the people who make the university function each day. In collaboration with Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, the 11th Vice Chancellor, the council has prioritized the growth, promotion, and wellbeing of staff.

This includes streamlining promotion processes and advocating for policies that uplift the personal and professional lives of university employees. These efforts have created a more supportive environment that encourages staff to grow alongside the university.

As Bayero University looks ahead, it does so with a renewed sense of purpose. The shared vision of Dr. Gawuna and Professor Abbas has breathed new energy into the institution, steering it toward greater recognition, enhanced learning environments, and innovative partnerships.

Their leadership has laid the groundwork for something enduring—an era where progress is not merely planned but actively pursued. The initiatives launched are already beginning to shape what BUK can become in the years ahead: a center of learning that reflects both excellence and inclusion.

As the day closes over the vibrant city of Kano and casts its golden glow across BUK’s rising structures, one thing is evident—a new chapter is being written. A chapter where excellence is not just an aspiration, but an ongoing journey.

With Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna at the helm, supported by a dedicated team, the university is not just moving forward—it is finding its rhythm, lifting its gaze, and preparing to reach heights once thought distant.
