Must count must work for Edo
In a bold and no-nonsense stance, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to contractors handling state-funded projects: deliver quality or face consequences.
Speaking during an unscheduled inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across the state, Governor Okpebholo declared that his administration would not tolerate substandard work or shady execution of contracts.
Chief press secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua in a statement on Tuesday quoted him to have emphasized that every naira received from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) must translate into tangible development for the people of Edo.
“I am accountable to the people who elected me, not to the contractors. Edo money is for Edo people,” the Governor said during a stop at the Upper Ekenhuan axis road project.
“This is not business as usual. We will inspect, monitor, and demand full compliance with project specifications.”
He disclosed that work has already been completed on the Upper Ekenhuan axis leading up to the Nigerian Army Cantonment and that the next phase, stretching through Igo community in Ovia North East, has been awarded and is set to commence within days.
“This was one of the first roads we passed when people poured out to complain. Now, they will see action. We’ve awarded the contract, and soon, machines will move in. Edo has embraced President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and this is how we bring that agenda to life—through real projects that touch lives,” he declared.
The Governor didn’t mince words as he vowed to hold contractors accountable to their agreements, insisting on full adherence to timelines, specifications, and transparency.
“We are inspecting every project, not for ceremony, but to verify. Shoddy jobs won’t be accepted. I’ve told my team: we are building trust with our people, and that trust cannot be broken by poor delivery. Edo funds must work for Edo people,” he said.
Governor Okpebholo’s tough talk on quality control is already sending ripples through the contracting community, signaling a new era of governance where performance, not politics, will determine survival on government project sites.
With several strategic road and community projects underway and more in the pipeline, the Governor is not just inspecting sites—he’s inspecting integrity.
