In a dramatic and symbolic show of force, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has incinerated 1.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs—the largest drug destruction operation in Nigeria’s history—sending a strong message to drug traffickers that there is no safe haven in the country.
The operation, which took place in Ipara, Ogun State, involved the destruction of massive quantities of narcotics seized across Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States.
The haul included, 1.4 million kg of cannabis, 123 kg of cocaine, 46.8 kg of heroin, 148,000 kg of codeine syrup, 3,244.26 kg of tramadol, 1,544 kg of skuchies and 111 kg of methamphetamine
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), NDLEA Chairman/CEO, emphasized the significance of the event, calling it a “powerful reminder” of the dangers of drug trafficking and a milestone in the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and safety.
“This is more than destruction—it’s a declaration. Drug traffickers should take note: the NDLEA will find you, prosecute you, and destroy your poison,” Marwa declared.
Represented by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, NDLEA’s Director of Assets and Financial Investigation, Marwa reaffirmed that all destroyed substances had passed through legal procedures and court authorizations following successful prosecutions.
The exercise, witnessed by top government officials, international partners, traditional rulers, NGOs, and security agencies, reinforced the agency’s transparency, accountability, and zero-tolerance approach to illicit drugs.
In the past four years, the NDLEA has secured over 10,500 convictions, showcasing its growing efficiency and resolve. Marwa praised the dedication of NDLEA officers and acknowledged vital support from:
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by retired AIG Olusola Subair, lauded the NDLEA’s efforts, describing them as lifesaving and community-strengthening.
“Their courage and consistency in intercepting dangerous drugs before they reach the streets is deeply commendable,” Subair said.
The operation spanned strategic NDLEA zones, including Lagos Seaports, MMIA, Idiroko, and Seme Border Commands—highlighting the nationwide scale and coordination behind the agency’s mission.
NDLEA indicated that Nigeria will not tolerate drugs, and every gram destroyed is a victory for communities, youth, and national security.
