The Nigeria Police Force has raised concerns over the planned nationwide protest by the Take It Back (TIB) Movement, calling the timing of the protest “ill-timed” and potentially disruptive.
In a statement released on Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, cautioned against the protest scheduled for April 7, noting that the day is significant as the National Police Day.
The day is dedicated to honoring the dedication and resilience of police officers in Nigeria, with high-profile international and local dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats, expected to attend the event.
“The planned protest coincides with an important occasion meant to recognize the efforts of our security forces. The motives behind the protest raise concerns, and we urge the organizers to reconsider,” Adejobi stated.
Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of TIB, had earlier explained that the protest was aimed at addressing issues surrounding the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The police have emphasized their commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly but called for more constructive engagement with government institutions to resolve grievances.
As the April 7 protest looms, the police’s warning has sparked debates about the right to protest versus maintaining national order.
