Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has issued a strong rebuttal to what it calls misleading and unfounded reports circulating on social media and certain online news platforms, challenging the credibility of its admissions process.

In an official statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Public Affairs Directorate, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar, the institution described the allegations as a distortion of facts tied to events that occurred over two years ago.

The reports reference the 2021/2022 Direct Entry admissions cycle, during which BUK detected and rejected several applications supported by forged results. Rather than constituting a scandal, BUK’s swift and principled action earned it national acclaim. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in 2023 honoured BUK with an Award of Excellence and Due Diligence — the first of its kind given to any Nigerian university — recognizing the school’s uncompromising stance on transparency and merit.

“BUK remains committed to quality, fairness, and integrity in all its academic processes,” the statement said. “We urge the public to disregard the false narratives being pushed online.”

As Nigeria’s higher education sector continues to grapple with issues of malpractice and fake credentials, BUK’s handling of the situation is being hailed as a model of institutional accountability and due process.
