The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken firm steps to bring its membership registration process under control, reaffirming that only ward-based registration is recognized by the party constitution.

In a statement signed by the National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, the party addressed growing confusion and unauthorized digital activities that have undermined its membership structure. “The current process is uncoordinated and chaotic,” Dr. Agunloye stated. “To preserve the integrity of our party, registration must be rooted at the ward level, as clearly stated in Article 10.1(d) and (e) of our Constitution.”

The National Working Committee (NWC) had earlier, at its March 20, 2025 meeting, directed a comprehensive overhaul of the registration framework. A formal circular to that effect is expected to be issued shortly.

Contrary to circulating links and platforms, no online or digital registration system has been approved by the party as of now. Dr. Agunloye clarified that although technology remains a valuable tool for managing membership data, it cannot override the authority and privacy of ward-level registration.

“Until further notice, all members must register through their ward offices. Membership cards will also be issued at the ward level, pending the introduction of a redesigned, tamper-proof version,” he said.

The National Secretary also urged officials to act responsibly and with unity during this transitional phase.
“We cannot afford to alienate new or returning members through internal squabbles or unclear processes. This is a period of rebuilding — and we must walk through it together.”

His final call was one of unity and forward movement: “This is not about victory or defeat. It’s about recommitting ourselves to the vision of the Social Democratic Party and the people we serve. Together, we will change the narrative.”
