Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP), has decried the mob action that led to the brutal killing of 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in Edo State, calling it a “devastating and unlawful act” that must not be tolerated.
Her Chief Press Secretary, Israel Arogbonlo in a statement on Saturday quoted her to have indicated that,
“The killing of these hunters is not just inhumane but a blatant violation of justice and the rule of law. It is unacceptable for vigilantes to take matters into their own hands instead of alerting the appropriate authorities,” she stated.
Senator Natasha urged security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice. While acknowledging the arrest of five suspects, she stressed that more must be done to prevent future occurrences of such violence.
She called on the government to strengthen law enforcement, enhance intelligence-sharing among security agencies, and educate communities on the dangers of mob justice. Additionally, she advised hunters to register their Dane guns with the police and always carry their licenses when travelling with weapons.
“Awareness and proper procedures are crucial in preventing tragic incidents like this,” she added, emphasizing the need for strict measures to curb lawlessness and safeguard innocent lives.
